Forum:Death by squid
Recently there's been discussion over whether the "update squids" has any use in the discord server anymore, with most veering towards deleting the role. The role served a purpose years ago, as tech chats were more secretive, however that purpose has moved to other channels and private messages. So I suggest getting rid of the role entirely.
Along with the role being deleted, I think it'd be common sense to also archive the channel.

Oppose - As not a sysadmin unless this is permission for me to discuss "sensitive" topics in #wiki-rs et al. Chen (talk) 19:34, 9 February 2020 (UTC)
Support - I never understood what it was and ppl kept giving meme answers so I never saw a point. Meeeeerds msg 19:35, 9 February 2020 (UTC)

Comment and slight support - The channel was originally for discussing and sharing information related to the game cache and various other technical things that we didn't necessarily want public. However, nowadays, this has sort of split two ways: we're generally more open to talking this sort of stuff in the #wiki-x channels (especially OSRS but also somewhat RS3), and many discussions have moved into DMs instead. So the channel has mostly been unused for a long time and the role is mostly vanity now. So I mostly support removing it unless there's a strong reconsideration into using it and pushing using it. Oppose - Rework into a proper vanity role because people like that shit for some reason. The whole pull of the channel is that it's exclusive and gives people a name colour so they don't feel like a "normal" editor/Discord User, deleting the role just kicks the actual issue down the road. If people want to feel special, let them. Can't argue that Update Squids doesn't serve a purpose and isn't active anymore when you have MvP to legit make one person feel special. Suppport - The purpose this role once served appears not to be the case anymore. Legaia 2 Pla ᴛ · ʟ · ᴄ 03:54, 10 February 2020 (UTC)
Support - The role is no longer needed as the sensitive discussions post-fork have happened mostly in public and the channel is pretty much dead. At minimum the role should have its colour removed, because there is no reason for its members to have attention drawn to them and the role is not about vanity. - TehKittyCatTalk Wikian-Book 05:19, 10 February 2020 (UTC)

Support - Per others the associated channel is basically dead with the conversations taking place elsewhere. Additionally it should not be used as a vanity role. A vanity role needs to be addressed elsewhere if it is something that is desired. Elessar2 (talk) 16:16, 10 February 2020 (UTC)
Comment and support - I was recently added and that channel is very dead, I honestly believe there's reconsideration to re-do it as it could contain a lot more info on cache data, etc. - Shaunypwns 19:09, 10 February 2020 (UTC)

Support - Even if it means kicking the can down the road for a bit, it seems to have little to no purpose right now, as per users who actually have the role and access. I don't see an issue with discussing bringing it back when the time arises. Badassiel 20:32, 10 February 2020 (UTC)
Support - The amount of messages in the #update-squad channel sharply dropped post-fork, and discussions that took place there now take place in public channels. -- SpineTalk 20:40, 10 February 2020 (UTC)
Support - The Discord channel and role is just legacy from when we had the Skype group back in 2015/2016. It had served its purpose and the role asks more questions now than solves ("how do I get the blue role? What is an update squid?") Haidro (talk) 21:29, 10 February 2020 (UTC)
Closed - There is consensus to retire the role and channel. Gaz (talk) 21:49, 26 February 2020 (UTC)
